Award-winning British Journal of Photography launches iPad app

The British Journal of Photography celebrates the launch of its new iPad App bringing it’s imagery to the digital screen.

Celebrating 160 years of publication is something of a miraculous achievement. Established in 1854, The British Journal of Photography is Britain’s longest running photography journal, and recently won the Photography Magazine of the Year at the Lucie Awards in Los Angeles.

That truly says something about the highly respected magazine’s impact amongst photographic professionals. It also shows the journal’s ability to move with the times. Afterall there’s never been a faster moving technology than that of the photographic image and as we move into a pure digital and communications age, The British Journal of Photography (BJP) is reflecting that and then some with the launch of its new iPad app.

The now monthly print magazine currently supported by the online website, will be amplified by the beautifully designed BJP app that is the culmination of nine months’ research and development by a team led by BJP’s art editor, Mick Moore, working to a brief set by editor Simon Bainbridge.

Bainbridge says about the transformation of BJP, “We’ve been undergoing something of a renaissance over the past 18 months, transforming our 157 year old weekly printed journal into a heavyweight monthly magazine that makes no compromise for quality, and then overhauling our website, focusing it on daily news and observations. In many ways, the iPad brings us full circle, allowing us to truly bring our features to life on a digital screen for the first time, and of course we are no longer restricted by the confines of paper and print, so we have packed it full of content.”

Bainbridge adds, “And what great timing, the tablet revolution, because it coincides with another – the convergence of still and motion images, which gets special focus in our first issue. Traditionally, magazines about filmmaking have one obvious flaw – you can’t show moving
images. Here, our only restriction is bandwidth.”

The British Journal of Photography iPad App shell can be downloaded free from the App Store at

The May issue is available to download free, and all other issues have a free preview edition.
