Japanese photography by Sasu Tei: Radioactive fashion fears

When Korean photographer Sasu Tei and his team showed us their images created as an expression of their ongoing fears for the future after the Japanese earthquake, tsunami and subsequent radiation meltdown we loved them.

But we also thought it would be interesting to ask the four artists to give us some personal thoughts on their experience, on their ongoing anxieties, their thoughts for the future.

We all watched with horror as images of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami hit our screens in March of this year. The natural disaster and the subsequent radiation meltdown left parts of the country devastated. Now in July, perhaps we imagine things are returning to normal in Japan. In some areas that may be true on the surface, although we have all seen the pictures this week of the people only just allowed to briefly visit homes in the radiation zones.

But the legacy of the disaster has left a psychological imprint on the people who lived through that day and weeks. Thanks to the team for laying themselves on the line –

PHOTOGRAPHER / SASU TEI

I am a Korean fashion photographer working in Japan, not a Japanese. But I can still remember the memories on that day in March 2011. It is not easy to forget about how it was and all my sorrows those days. The earthquake didn’t seem to stop and keep coming again and again – still today in July.

The enterprisers and the politicians in this country should stop hiding the truth about the dangers, and also stop trying to do this atomic power generations again. Because people in Japan really know the earthquakes come frequently nowadays and they have the rights to see the realities, willing to conquer it on their own.

We need the Truth. Not a story teller.

So at last I think everyone should go together to console each other, sharing their deep grief and hurts, and participate to get better places and lives from this critical situations.

At first, I can tell this is a great distress of this country and to the world. Lots of people lost their lives because of this Tsunami. There are many problems which is meant to be solved frequently, simply called “Radioactivity”. And still, People are seeking safety in refuge, finding the shelters evacuate from place to another.

But hopes are still here in Japan with people desire to live with the positive mind in this natural disasters, keep trying to conquer it. All I want for this situation is to go back to the condition of where it was as soon as possible doing our best for our places with everyone’s powerful positive thinkings.
