Staff Benda Bilili

Staff Benda Bilili are not your average band. A collection of paraplegic street musicians who live in and around the grounds of the zoo in Kinshasa, Congo, the group makes music from a selection of homemade instruments.

Limi Feu

Limi Feu comes with the preface of eminent background, teamed with an uninhibited street attitude. So perhaps being daughter to the famous Yohji Yamamoto provides a fashion perspective beyond fashion. Her independent aesthetic is not overly convoluted. Limi simply prefers to observe people walking down the street.

Satan Comes to Bucharest

The city has been attacked. No one really knows by who, or what damage has been done, but the signs are there. Pink plaster cocoons have appeared on the concrete walls. A round face stares out from the top of each of these strange creations; whether they are meant to be babies or some kind of alien worm, nobody knows.

Unicorns

My acceptance of a simple journalistic assignment had propelled me into the realms of the fantastic. Although admittedly some of the unicorns residing in my house were of my own creation; lurking in a notebook from years back. These were not the sweet faced luminous unicorns so beloved of the Aquarian children. No, these were the bastard children of Lewis Carol.

Grandmaster Flash

When talking about the genesis of hip hop, the name Grandmaster Flash looms large. He was the creator of the genre in many ways spawning a generation of DJs and recording some of the earliest moments of hip hop on vinyl. And now Flash, as he prefers to be known, has a new album The Bridge: Concept Of A Culture - his first release in twenty years.

Stanley Kubrick

This spring and ten years on from his death, the BFI are celebrating Kubrick’s life and work with a retrospective of his films at BFI Southbank. The myth surrounding Kubrick is the archetypal insane genius, the reclusive megalomaniac, the control freak. And yet all who knew him speak with great warmth and love for Stanley.
