Niamh O'Connor

Old school fundamentals like pen and paper are old news in the modern designers toolbox. Kingston University graduate Niamh O’Connor, educates us all with her final collection NOC.

Fusing together creativity and technology, Niamh explores the human body, through physicality and social interaction. Taking direction from her master’s course, Niamh embraces a “hybrid-design”, combing digital technology with movement.
Remembering the importance of play, Niamh experimented with childhood game musical statues. When the music was stopped, the participants would maintain a fixed pose, which was then replicated into a garment. The obscure silhouettes were then worn by the participants once they were standing in their natural stature.  Inspired by youthful dance culture of 1990’s, Niamh used body-paint on herself that was then transferred onto paper and finally digitalized to create the prints used in her NOC collection. The prints represent a kaleidoscope of colour that changes in the wearer’s movement.
When asked her fashion experiment, Niamh’s concluded that, “Only through movement do the garments become animated and the true functionality of the garment can be seen.”
Science lessons just got fashionable with NOC, fashion of the future.
