Mikio Sakabe

by Rachel Edwards

Adore – to regard with the utmost esteem, love, and respect. The title of Mikio Sakabe’s latest collection, it’s his homage to a time of prosperity and pride. “I use adore because the current crisis is making people depressed and my collection references the 80s, a moment that was so rich and the economy was doing so well in Japan.”

An expat from Japan, Sakabe received his fashion training in Paris followed by the Hogeschool Antwerpen in Belgium. Also the winner of several European fashion awards, he holds his time in Antwerp in high regard. “I really like Belgian designers, their approach and attitude towards fashion. I could learn everything about fashion in Antwerp.”

Facing the constant challenge of presenting each season in both Asia and Europe, he’s proven himself capable of conquering each city as he embraces it. “I feel so differently towards each city and value them each in this way also. I’m beginning to understand little by little what I should be expressing as a designer.”
