RA Space

by Rachel Edwards
Fostering the cross-fertilisation of local and global creative talent, RA is a merging of minds through an mix of media. An 800 quare metre space founded by Antwerp fashion academy students Romain Brau and Anna Kushnerova, it's comprised of a fashion floor, bookstore, music and food corner.
A concept store, everyone involved is united by the hope of creating a platform that is not a slave to seasons or commercial demand. With a continuous stream of new generation collaborators and guest contributors including Giles, Gareth Pugh, Cosmic Wonder and Tillman Lauterbach to name a distinctive few, the space holds no boundaries as artists, fashion designers and musicians are invited to do what they wish inside its walls. Speaking to Brau and Kushnerova about the space they explain, "Ra hopes to inspire, promote, discover and bridge emerging talent and we hope for our visitors to continuously discover and be surprised every visit."
A tangibly fluid experience, they've endeavoured to create something more than merely a shop or an exhibition. "With the idea that an exhibition can become more than visual, it enters into all aspects of the Ra space: from the visuals to the music played, to the printed matter and even culinary taste."
Facilitating in-house publishing by young and emerging writers and photographers, they describe it as a 'dynamic laboratory' also offering a stage for a wide range of art media - painting, drawing, mixed media, sculpture, photography, video, large scale installations and performance art.
"We wanted to create a space that is open for interpretation, dynamic, yet it represents an expression and universe for collaborating," they explain. Having achieved an influential melting pot that is actively nurturing our next generation of creatives, it's taking the concept of a concept store to a whole other level.
