Bright young things of Manchester football and fashion launch new Manchester City T-shirts

Manchester City Football Club has, like the city itself, always had a bit of a die-hard spirit. In a season that sees them gracing the top half of the Premier League, the grass roots fans that saw the club through the hard times are not forgotten with the launch of two new T-shirts for Christmas that symbolise the unique relationship the fans have with the club.

Following the sell-out graphic t-shirts from earlier in the season, the new 'Banana' and 'We're Not Really Here' styles are a reference to famous City terrace movements. At a time when English football was at a low ebb during the late 80s, a craze to bring back a smile to fans' faces began at Maine Road during the 87/88 season with a single inflatable banana. The banana, which many believe originated from the inability to pronounce '80s striker Imre Varadi's surname, followed City everywhere and soon became a familiar figure on the terraces. This single act created an inflatable craze that has been a feature at stadiums ever since. The 'We're Not Really Here' T-shirt pays homage to the fans that stood by City when they were in the old third division. The phrase remains a terrace chant today at the City of Manchester stadium.

David Pullan from MCFC says, "These T-shirts are a symbol of the fan culture at Manchester City Football Club. They are the heart and soul of this club, through the good and bad times."
And to remain true to the fan's grass roots spirit, Umbro and MCFC has looked to some emerging stars to promote the shirts. City youngsters, Ben Mee and David Ball, along with a host of Manchester students have starred in a photographic shoot of the new T-shirts. And the shoot itself was styled by Same Teens, recent winners of the first Umbro Industries competition that is providing the Manchester creative community with a bursary to realise their ideas. Same Teens are a collective who cross genres to put on club nights and produce a magazine, XOX, featuring the work of Manchester's aspiring photographers, writers and stylists. Definitely one to watch.
