Pioneering style bible i-D have been there, championing and magnifying each epic youth wave over the last few decades. We’ve watched as the changing figures of style have winked their way onto the iconic fashion cover.
As a celebration of the ever changing winking faces, they’ve have got together with two key creative forces to take us on a visual journey spanning the subcultural decades as i-D celebrates 35 years of style.
International makeup artist Ralph Siciliano has teamed up with respected film duo, Santiao & Mauricio, to create a film that captures the energy and essence of the vibrant youth scenes that have been catapulted onto the world stage. We get to meet iconic visions of youth culture characters from Punk and the New Romantics through to Indie, Rave and Grunge all the way on to Seapunks and the future, all brought to life in the bodies of i-D’s favourite top models and street cast stars. Featuring Molly Bair, Fernanda Ly, Lili Sumner and Hari Nef, the collaboration has been pioneered in partnership with Microsoft to celebrate the launch of the HP Spectre x360 as part of the ‘Beautiful Collaborations’ project.
Watching the film takes us on a voyeuristic ride through 35 years of street style, illuminating and amplifying the atmosphere of each era in vibrant snapshots expressing the intensity of a true style creature; the fashion, the noise; searching for that pure hypnotic sense of culture at its most tantalising. The collaborative film was created pushing technology to the limit with the help of the HP Spectre x360 which is a powerful and stylish piece of kit in itself. We’re taken into a darkened subterranean world, where memories of the 80s, 90s and 00s materialise before we hit the present day and even get to see a glimpse of the future. The soundtrack has been especially composed for the film to interpret the decades sonically so you can hear each era bubbling to the fore within a unique contemporary soundscape.
So what of i-D’s vision of subcultures yet to come? Take a look and see what you think of their predictions for our style future.
