Berlin’s Kvast and their veggie jewel menu

Creating collections in their Berlin based studio since 2007, Kvast – designers Britta Knüppel and Verena Kern – find gems in unexpected humdrum places. However, that doesn’t mean that they have not searched high and low for such objects. Kern and Knüppel have excavated Australia, stripped down Italy and ventured through the Netherlands. Both have garnered themselves numerous national and international prizes on their way so it comes as no surprise that with their touch, they turn these everyday items into gold, 24-carat gold to be exact.

Banality tinged with fantasy, the ordinary glazed with metallic fragility. This stark contrast makes Knüppel’s and Kem’s designs both surprising and humorous. From forgotten toy animals to dust catchers and collectors’ items to quite simply, fruit and veg. These familiar objects act as archives of inspiration for their jewellery and accessory collections. When their time has come to say good-bye to the mantelpiece that has been their home for the past decade, or the drawer that they were tossed in and forgotten about or the fruit bowl where they mundanely lie, the items are plucked and transformed into unique pendants, handmade in Berlin with love.

On the current Kvast Veggie Jewel menu, there are peas, lentils, broccoli and cherry stalks. All come served in a cast of sterling silver. The 24-Carat Pets, as the title suggests, are coated in 24-carat gold and deserve more than to be slumped on a shelf with the rest of your belongings. These are delicately detailed and lend a quirky touch to any outfit.

Their Nylon Collection seeks to be equally individual. Using advanced technology, delicate hand painted ankle length and knee-high socks feature finely embroidered patterns that look as if they were handmade.

The designers ensure us that real fruit and vegetables were harmed during the making of these products.
