Semibreve Festival: Sonic Explorations in Portugal

by Daniel Lennard

After the success of last year’s Semibreve Festival, the digital music and arts event returns for more kosmische sonic and visual explorations.

As with the previous happening, Semibreve will take place in beautiful Braga, Portugal, and has expanded to take in the city of Guimarães too. It will be integrated in the European Youth Capital 2012 and European Culture Capital programmes.

A pan-European (and beyond…) festival with a keen sense of localism, Semibreve intends to merge the two capital’s ethos, allying innovation, technology and research to culture and arts.

As such, next to established albeit envelope pushing creatives such as Mouse and Mars, Pole, Ryoji Ikeda, Grischa Lichtenberger and Vladislav Delay, will be emerging leftfield talents. Ben Frost will present a concert in Theatro Circo. Pole, with visuals from Portuguese visual artist p.ma and will be at Centro Cultural Vila Flor to perform a concert based on new material which has already wowed audiences at festivals such as Unsound NY and Mutek 2012. Grischa Lichtenberger will also perform in Centro Cultural Vila Flor.

Danish artist Jacob Kirkegaard, with works published on labels such as Touch, will present AION, a video and sound work based on resonance recordings of abandoned rooms inside the radioactive exclusion zone in Chernobyl.

Semibreve will include a series of workshops, with special regard to one focused on video art conducted by Joanie Lemercier, artistic director of Antivj.

It’s emotionally and intellectually engaging stuff guaranteed to stimulate both your feet and brain cells. Set amongst the gorgeous environs of two Portuguese cities, this might be the perfect late summer break for you and the chin-stroker in your life.
