Sun, Sea and…WI-FI? Can you do without internet on holiday?

Sun, Sea and…WI-FI? Can you do without internet on holiday? – words Al Woods

Everybody loves a holiday. Whether it’s to work on your tan, explore a new country or just sit back and relax, there’s nothing Brits like more than escaping the trials and tribulations of modern life and jetting off to a far flung land.

However, it appears there is one modern amenity that 16-24 year olds are not prepared to leave behind on their holidays. The internet.

A new survey from electrical retailer AO.com has revealed that a strong WI-FI connection in holiday accommodation was voted as the third most essential requirement for 16-24 year olds, finishing above other popular factors such as a gym, a private pool and even room with a view! Internet access while traveling internationally is that important to us.

16-24 holidaymakers top holiday accommodation priorities.

  1. Close to the beach
  2. Close to city centre
  3. Strong Wi-Fi
  4. Room with a view
  5. Bar/Restaurant
  6. Private pool
  7. Kids centre
  8. Smart TV
  9. Gym
  10. Complimentary device chargers

It appears the lures of Facebook, Instagram and our Twitter feeds are too strong to resist for the younger generation, with the thought of not being able to access these platforms proving to be a deal breaker when it comes to selecting a holiday destination.

Simon Exton, Director of Consumer Electronics at AO.com, has commented on the statistics:

“Technology is a major part of day-to-day life in the UK, and it’s no surprise that some of us are uncomfortable with the idea of going cold turkey. However, we want people to know there are plenty of other great things your devices can do to enhance your holiday, if you find yourself without a strong Wi-Fi connection.

So what happens if you find yourself abroad with (shock horror) no WI-FI!?

As part of their Sun. Sea. Tech. Easy. guide, AO.com have put together a few suggestions on how to get the most out of your gadgets, for example.

  • Preparation is key. Remember to download any audiobooks, music and films onto your devices before you travel, so that if you’re unable to stream them, you can still enjoy them.
  • Make sure you have plenty of offline games at your disposal. As of March 2017 there were 2.8 billion apps on the Apple app store so you should have plenty of options to choose from.
  • If you simply can’t bear it and need to check on your social accounts, mobile data is still accessible abroad, just double check your networks fees for using this service outside of the UK. You could find yourself being charged extra.
