Men’s Adventures – Solitary Trip EP – Raw Psychedelic Surf Rock

Looking like they have stepped out of the 50’s with greased quiffs and tattered shirts, Americana dreamers Men’s Adventures capture their unique form of heartfelt country, acoustic psychedelia and surf rock, with second EP ‘Solitary Trip’.

‘Solitary Trip’ opens with the tobacco stained finger picking, and spoken work introduction of ‘B.B Vulture’, before building into a rolling guitar riff that sits somewhere between Woody Guthrie and an Ennio Morricone spaghetti western soundtrack.

The 50’s Sun Studio aesthetics continue as the tumbleweed ambles by on the dusty and tender strings of ‘Welcome Home’. London duo Jimmy Casson and Alfie Smith share vocal duties for their tall tales that bring together the acoustic balladry of Neil Young combined with the raw storytelling of Nick Cave.

The spirit of ‘Solitary Trip’ partly lies within its production, as they capture the essence and honesty of garage aesthetics alongside vintage recording equipment. This can be felt in the ‘Nashville Sky’ era Bob Dylan and Old Crow Medicine Show folk shuffle of ‘Friends’, sounding like the original 60’s dust still sits heavy on the mixing desk. Relishing in its own sense of sincerity is brooding closer ‘Feeling Bad’, a psychedelic, dirty country epic, with a melody that captures the soul of Leonard Cohen.

Men’s Adventures show promise on their second outing, containing Charles Bukowsi inspired late nights, drunken tales, heartbreak and friendship that transports the listener to the dusty plains of America.
