Planning an unforgettable road trip? Don’t leave home without this checklist

words Andre Wahlberg

You’ve got the itch to travel the world from the behind the wheel of your trusty vehicle. It’s you’re your number one Ace for decades and still shows no signs of ever slowing down.

While there’s nothing more adventurous that setting out on your own or with a few friends to explore, it may not be as simple for you to get up and go as you think. If you are planning an unforgettable road trip – before you hit the road, here are a few things you shouldn’t ignore.

Make an itinerary. Although you want to take your chances and see where the wind takes you, it doesn’t make much sense for you to travel blindly. Plan out your path of choice, include the cities and areas you plan to see and make sure to leave a copy of your itinerary with family. You want them to know or have a general idea of where you are during your travels, so they can assist you in times of emergency.

Pack light because your car only has so much room. Depending on the length of your trip, you may not need to take a lot of personal items with you. Think about your destinations and the climate in the areas you plan to see. Pack your essentials, such as underwear, toothpaste, and medications. You’ll need to be more discerning about everything else.

Get your vehicle checked out. Don’t just settle for getting the brakes fixed and an oil change. Your whole car needs to be evaluated to ensure its mechanical and safety. Be sure to get a Pittsburgh wheel alignment, suspension system evaluation and the AC serviced.

Get you travel documents in order. Just because you plan to travel by car doesn’t mean that you have no need for your passport or travelers cheques. Make copies of them and store them safely in your luggage. You never know when you’ll need them and if you ever lose your driver’s license or credit cards, you won’t be stuck and stranded without any means to survive. If you intend on working while you travel then make sure you have a new PAN card so that you are on financial records (this is particularly important in India).

Before you go anywhere, make sure you are fully prepared. Anticipate what you might need and make arrangements to ensure that you are able to maximize your trip and minimize the risk of inconvenience.
