Great ways to unleash your inner creativity

Great ways to unleash your inner creativity – words Alexa Wang

Without creativity, there would be no innovation or change. It allows us to grow by coming up with new and exciting ideas. It encourages a sense of achievement and brings novelty into the everyday routine.

Schedule in some time for a creative work-out and choose from our top three ways to unleash your inner creativity.

Write It Out

Journaling is quick, easy to start and anyone can do it. It’s also a tangible way to digest the tangle of thoughts and feelings that we pour out into our phones and screens every day.

Start with a beautiful notebook (consider making one yourself!) and a pen that feels comfortable in your hand – and will allow you to express yourself.

Next, carve out a regular time to journal. Daily, weekly, after certain jobs or tasks. Many recommend first thing in the morning when you’re fresh. Or perhaps you need to download at the end of the day. Take 10-15 minutes to yourself, then get writing!

Write about your day, a dream from the night before, a short story or a made up character. Add lists, doodles or illustrations – remember this is entirely for you!

Create a Masterpiece

With the proliferation of craft markets – both offline and online – there are now more avenues than ever to express yourself – and share your expressions with others!

There are many ways to start a new art or craft endeavour, and you don’t have to be an expert with an arsenal of expensive tools at your disposal. Jump online to a major retailer such as Spotlight, to find all the art and craft starter packs and kits that you’ll need.

Paint by numbers, dream catcher kits, air-dry clay and jewellery making sets are just a few examples of some easy “gateway” crafts that will help you build up your confidence without breaking the bank.

Try setting yourself a schedule of new things – whether it be a new media every month, or watching a few different online tutorials – don’t be afraid to give it a go!

Take a Snap

Taking photos on your phone is so easy. A selfie, a shot of your dinner or a sunset.

Task yourself with taking one unique and special photo every day for a month. But not the usual stuff that fills up your phone’s photo library – perhaps it’s a close up shot of a beetle on a leaf, the hustle and bustle of a train platform, a window with rain dripping down.

Each day you’ll find yourself looking at things from a new perspective and becoming inspired by the world around you.
